The Power We Have for Change Is Real

One of the greatest gifts in the world is having both the desire and ability to change. You might not think of these as a gift, but how many of you know of someone who really needs to change, but has no desire to? Or, how many people in other parts of the world wake up with the desire for change, but the circumstances around them don’t give them that choice? For them, change is a luxury. This is why I say the desire and ability to change is one of the greatest gifts we can have. And it is very likely that if you are reading this article that you are one of those with the power (desire + ability) to change.

You have the power to change. You can change a habit, you can change a behavior and you can even change the way you think. This may sound like your everyday motivational hype, but as it turns out, there is some deep and rich science behind it all. So much so that there is an entire field of study dedicated to the changing human brain called Neuroplasticity.

The brain is unendingly and quite surprisingly elastic. You can actually teach your own brain new ways! We now know that you actually don’t have to have that (bad) habit forever. Our ability to change and grow in new ways throughout our entire lives is proven scientifically. And oh, the science they now do on this facet of the brain!

But as it turns out, free will still has the upper hand. And this is where Rewire stands apart from the motivational hype machine: just because we now know that neurons regenerate between our ears doesn’t mean that we will automatically change. It takes work. Many of us need coaching and support and community for this change. Most importantly, we still have to decide for ourselves everyday to do so. And in the words of Neil Pert, “If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice.” (Bonus points given for any Wireboard reader who can give me the other lyrics in that song, or even its title without looking it up on Google)

Perhaps we will all learn that the single most powerful force known in our world is our power over our own thinking and the subsequent power we have to change our own lives.

I don’t usually end my articles with videos from other sources, but if you are at all interested in this cosmically powerful choice we have, then you’ll want to watch this:
